Woodard Furniture is hiring for dozens of general labor positions
OWOSSO, Mich. (WJRT) – Hiring in progress: Woodard Furniture, one of the largest employers in Shiawasee County, is looking to fill approximately 50 general labor positions.
It comes as the furniture company faces a massive backlog of orders as well as continued pent-up demand for its products.
ABC12 News has learned that the company has a specific requirement for all of its employees, that all employees must be vaccinated.
In fact, they mandated the COVID-19 vaccine on September 1, long before there was any talk of a federal vaccine mandate.
A few hundred workers, such as seamstresses, welders or assemblers, show up every day to work at Woodard Furniture in Owosso.
But, they would need a little more help.
“We are recruiting for all positions in the plant. We hire welders, we hire people in upholstery, we hire assemblers, loaders and in upholstery and welding, we will train if anyone is interested in learning a trade, ”Lou Zelenka said , factory manager.
Zelenka said there is something that sets working at Woodard apart from other employers, and that is the requirement that all employees be vaccinated against COVID-19.
” It was not easy. There were some who were not in favor of it, but the vast majority of our people agreed – so now we’re at 98% I think. There are a few exceptions, ”Zelenka said.
Woodard is one, if not the only employer in the county that mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for all employees, which was done earlier this fall.
It’s something that gives John Allison, who showed up at today’s job fair, a bit more piece of mind.
“At least you don’t have to worry about wearing this mask. I’m so glad I don’t have to wear this anymore, ”said Allison.
Zelenka told ABC12 News that they have lost a few employees to the tenure, but he hopes that because the tenure is in place it will help attract and retain potential employees who might be looking for that specific work environment.
“Their confidence level is 100%, the people they work with are vaccinated,” Zelenka said.
The starting salary for these open positions is between $ 13 and $ 16 per hour. It includes all of the standard benefits including medical, dental, and a 401k.
There is also the possibility of Christmas bonuses and profit sharing.
If an interested person missed today’s career fair, don’t worry, there is still time to apply online.
