Senate adds trade package to major technology bill aimed at China

Law360 (May 27, 2021, 11:13 p.m. EDT) – The Senate on Thursday added a major section on international trade to a sprawling bill that already contained around $ 250 billion to boost the country’s technological and economic competition with China , including more than $ 50. billion dollars for domestic production of semiconductors and 1.5 billion dollars for telecommunications financing, as well as measures to strengthen intellectual property and antitrust laws.

But the package ran into problems Thursday night as an objector blocked early action, according to Minority Whip John Thune, RS.D.

“I don’t know how we solve this one,” Thune told reporters around 8:30 pm. “At the moment, there is no real way forward.
