Baylor volleyball grateful for long-awaited home debut | Baylor
Those first three weeks of the season have been a yoga session, stretching the Bears into difficult positions. But McGuyre sees a team getting better and more comfortable in their new roles with each passing day. The addition of the transfer Avery Skinner from the Kentucky national champion last spring gave Baylor a glut of All-American outside hitters, as she joined Yossiana Pressley and Lauren Harrison in that endeavor.
So it became a bit of a puzzle exercise for McGuyre to figure out where everyone fits.
“I think we’ve at least cut back, these pieces are going to go into that corner of the puzzle,” McGuyre said. “Now which room (goes where), we continue to work on it. But, at least we know which half it’s in.
The roster reshuffle has led Van der Mark to slide to a whole new position. The 6-foot-6, fifth-year-old has moved on to the center tackle from her familiar old right-side batting position. Everything is so new and there is so much to learn that Van der Mark said she felt like a freshman again.
“The first conversation I had with Coach Mac (about the move) was quite interesting, it was fun,” Van der Mark said. “I didn’t know if this was going to happen. I was just like, okay, let’s have fun and see what the team needs. I was ready to sacrifice everywhere and do what’s best for the team. If it’s in the middle, it’s in the middle, if it’s on the right side, then it’s on the right side. I’m really happy to be here with the team again.
